LETTER FROM THE DEAN
With this new vision for our future, the School of Social Sciences at Rice University is embarking on a path to take our place as a preeminent home for social sciences research worldwide. We must capitalize on our relationships with local institutions just as we must seek new international partnerships. We must better support faculty research and our graduate programs. We must reimagine our Gateway program for undergraduates, providing more experiential learning and professional development opportunities. And of course, we must maintain our reputation for superb teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. We will do all of this with diversity, equity, and inclusion at the forefront of everything we do.
Our Strategic Planning Committee spent a year consulting stakeholders and envisioning this comprehensive plan, which focuses on five planks which will take the School to the next level of visibility and impact. The School of Social Sciences Advisory Board also provided valuable input and insight for the Plan.
We can achieve these goals by harnessing the innovation, brilliance, and hard work of our faculty, staff, and students; investing in strategic growth; and engaging both the campus and broader communities. The School of Social Sciences is already tackling some of society’s greatest challenges. Now, we will work together to ensure our research and teaching have more impact than ever before.
